Information Doesn’t Want to Be Free, by Cory Doctorow can be summarised by his three laws:

  • Doctorow’s First Law: “Any time someone puts a lock on something that belongs to you and won’t give you the key, that lock isn’t there for your benefit”.
  • Doctorow’s Second Law: “Fame won’t make you rich, but you can’t get paid without it”.
  • Doctorow’s Third Law: “Information doesn’t want to be free, people do”.

These laws have been focused on the creative industry throughout the book and putting extra attention on the use of copyright. They explain the way on how the internet has changed the way the creative industry have worked since the beginning, with the artist having to find new ways to get their products around. But the internet has also been a tool used by companies to harness their products and checking copyright infringements. Doctorow uses the example of Edward Snowden to inform us that the internet should not be taken for granted even though the internet will forever be our main tool at least for the next century. He states that the creative industry needs to know how to share free speech in order to use the internet in a better way. He ends with a warning that the internet, “can set us free, or it can enslave us”.

In my opinion, this book has been very interesting to me, in the way of seeing how the artist has adapted to the internet and how companies have been using copyright and harnessing their products through the internet. The internet is a “wicked problem” that cannot be solved by anyone in the near future but it can be lived with for the time being.
