The internet is full of interesting and horrifying things and databases are one of them. Databases that are easily accessible to the public on the internet that the controversy of privacy and security of the information on them. I will be analysing the social and ethical implications of some of these databases.

Terrorist Screening Database

The first database that is going to be discussed is the FBI no-fly list. This database holds names of those who are suspected of being terrorists and are barred from flying. The stakeholders involved in this particular case is the FBI and Tom McClintock, a Representative in the Lower House in the USA. This was a case of mistaken identity but it cost Mr McClintock stress as he was being blacklisted as a terrorist. Security and privacy are the social issues that should be concerned. For this database, I would ensure certain policies and standards were added to improve data integrity and security as having a mistaken identity in this database could be horrendous for the victim.

Information is beautiful – Worlds Biggest Data Breaches

This database is about the databases throughout the 21st century being attacked by hackers. It also shows the number of people affected by this, how sensitive the data was and from which sector these data were leaked from. The stakeholders within this database are the companies that have been affected and the people who used these companies. Privacy of the companies is the only social issue that should be concerned. In this case, I believe that the database and system are fine as it is as it only informs people about what happened and does not show the data that was leaked.

Land Matric Website for Low and Middle Income Countries

This database contains information about different projects within some countries in the world and shows its status of whether it is in its startup phase or it has been abandoned. The stakeholders involved in this database are the project companies and the countries where the projects are. The privacy of the companies should be concerned. I believe that the database and system are fine as it is as it only informs people what projects are happening in the countries and there is no confidential data within them.

Queensland Police Service Crime Website

This database has data which talks about the different types of crimes that have occurred in Queensland, their dates and time of day. The stakeholders involved in this database are the police and the people living around the area of the crimes. The privacy of the database should be concerned as the people living around the area would be concerned. I believe that the database and system are fine as it is as it only informs the people around the area of what crimes have been happening.

North Carolina Criminal Offender Database

This database contains the names of past offenders in the state of North Carolina who have been released from jail. The stakeholders within this database are the past offenders and the family of the offenders. The social issues concerned are privacy and anonymity. I believe that the Department of Public Safety needs to ensure certain policies and standards were added to improve data integrity and security as having the past offenders names on the internet for the public might affect their privacy.

Family Watchdog

This database contains the names and information about sex offenders through where they live. The stakeholders within this database are the sex offenders, people living around the sex offender and the people who run the watchdog site. The social issues concerned are privacy and anonymity. I believe that the watchdog should ensure certain policies and standards were added to improve data integrity and security as certain information can be public knowledge but data like the date of birth does not need to be known, the watchdog should also take down the names that are taken off the sex offender’s list.
