Good day and why hello to my amazing readers out there in the WWW!

Today I am here to share my thrilling and mind-bending experience with CISCO’s Packet Tracer. This is a program which allows user to emulate real life networks just on their PC! The program is highly complex and due to the limitations of time and necessity, I will run through my experience with it briefly.

I followed Nicholas Andre’s video on creating a simple LAN using this program and I urge you to watch it too, he explains the process lucidly.

I first began with placing the components of my network down on the worktable: 3 PCs and a switch to connect them all. This created a star topology network, meaning all the data has to pass through a centralised router/switch, in this case I used a switch.

I first created a simple network to play and test with the IP Address, subnet mask and command prompts, which allowed me to check to see if my network was successfully connected.

I connected the devices using a simple copper wire and fast forwarded time have all the network tables in each device to be compatible with the other devices.

In the Command Prompt: I tested to see if there was a connection by sending a ping to the other PC.

Filtering everything out except for the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) meant that I only tested one protocol to ensure that my network worked.

In the end when I ran the simulation and my message was successfully sent to the desired PC and back to the original.


I have learnt the process of connecting devices to a network and the importance of having a switch for direct transfers. I can see how adding a device to this network is fairly easy and if one client device breaks down, it does not affect the rest of the network, however if the switch broke down, then the whole network is immobilised. I can see how precise the subnet mark and IP addresses have to be in order to have a successful connection and I really value and respect the complexity of managing networks in real life. The reliability of a network is crucial to maintaining a constant and strong connection, and if this breaks down, then devices would not be able to connect to each other, hindering tasks to be carried out.
