The committee to protect Journalists released a list of the “10 worst countries to be a blogger” to call attention to online oppression. Bloggers in Myanmar, Iran, and Syria work under some of the most repressive conditions in the world, facing regulation, intimidation, and even imprisonment. The world of blogging is becoming more popular with numbers expanding rapidly. But governments are censoring and filtering the internet restricting the public from online data. Myanmar, which is first on the list, has the military government that restricts web access.  Anyone who posts critical material will be thrown in jail. The government also monitors e-mails and blocks the public from websites of the opposition parties. A blogger from Myanmar, Muang Thura, received a 59 year prison sentence for circulating video footage after Cyclone Nargis (Tropical Cyclone).

2nd on the list is Iran, whose authorities regularly detain and harass bloggers who dare to criticize religious or political figures, the Islamic revolution or its symbols.’

The other countries listed are:

  • Syria
  • Cuba
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Tunisia
  • Turkmenistan
  • China
  • Egypt

Hi all,

I will not be able to attend your lesson on Friday so here is what you need to do - I discussed with both Youngtroopz and Fats about the depth and structure of your research on the different IT Systems on the wiki.

So it is important you check each of the following is placed on each wiki page:-

1) Description of IT System - using the Input - Process - Output - Storage Model.

2) Simple defiition - something that is perfect for you to remember for the define questions that will come up.

3) Videos embedded  -thats specifically describe the IT system well and also how it is used in real contexts and within Online Businesses

4) Real articles / links to examples of how the technology is linked to the Case Study

5) Problems/Challenges/ and Solutions to how IT system is used.

6) Must have a minimum of 5 sources - please quote if you have used text from another source

7) Use quotes - line numbers from the Case Study so you can refer back

8) Make sure that you structure the wiki page in small sections that are under headings, easy to read and understand

9) Make sure your descriptions are in your own words so that you can fully describe systems within the actual examination

I will be looking at the beginning of next week at each of your pages so please make sure they are up to standard and will be useful. First lesson next week we will have a definitions test related to each of the IT Systems.

Please use your time wisely in this lesson as there is a lot to do.

P.S. Zowt please send me electronic versions of your Portfolios.

Despite being late (even though the document was ready on Thursday),  I still have not forgotten my trusty ITGS triangle. I digress, so I"ll just jump into this interesting article.  To sum it up, the article was written by Matt Peckham at MSNBC, who wrote a story about a controversial news story by Fox News [inb4ofcourse], involving a report on the new 'Medal Of Honor' reboot being done by EA games.  The controversy, [incorrectly reported by Fox News], was actually being able to play Taliban in multiplayer, as the game is authentic as well (while most video-games are realistic). Now, needless to say is that there was some backlash as the game is based on events which are still on going in Afghanistan.  This has brought into question whether playing authentic situations (meaning, playing the taliban in competitive multiplayer) should be done in gaming, as there are still people out there who feel sensitive about war (whether you were a soldier, family member, etc.).

Now, as a 'gaming-enthusiast', this has a huge impact the leisure side of technology, because really people just game as a form of relaxation. Now with there being backlash on games that recreate situations ongoing, whether it be in Grand Theft Auto 4 in which you play a civilian trying to lead a more legalized life, or Modern Warfare 2 in which your experiencing realistic situations, but not actual situations (Though controversial, for an airport shoot-up sequence).  The interesting thing about Medal Of Honor (because I've kept some close tabs on it), is that they've actually interviewed the Tier One operatives and brought out the level of authenticity. I personally think that, once again, this comes down to the fact that it is a game. I understand while people may not appreciate this opinion, is that we are playing this game on a machine, and at the end of the day, it is no real war experience going on in the living room. To that extent, we still have to remind ourselves at times that our interaction with machines shouldn't really emotionally effect us.

Below, is my breakdown of the article from the ITriGS view!

President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela has been protesting about Twitter posts made by Venezuelans and journalists. The Twitter posts were against Chavez's government, one was called 'freevenezuela'. Chavez stated Twitter is a ''tool of terror''. Chavez plans to regulate the internet and he has submitted a legislation that is yet to be approved by the National Assembly, in order to do so.

My ITGS triangle includes:

Stakeholders- Journalists, Opposition (goverment), and Tweeters

Social and Ethical Aspects- Control, Policies & Standards, and Equality of Access

Specific Areas of Impact- Politics & Government and Education

IT Systems in a Social Context- Twitter and the Internet

A recent article by BBC News states that the Chinese government is still firm in their choices of Internet censorship. While most countries keep blocked websites to a minumum, China is known for being ruthless in what the public can and cannot see online. Examples include social networking sites such as Facebook for allowing free communication to outside countries and Flash-hosting sites such as Newgrounds for showing violent content. As an April Fool's joke, Newgrounds showed what they would have to do to comply with Chinese regulations to un-censor them. All movies and games for mature audiences were blocked, along with the forums which also included word filters for pre-existing posts (e.g. 'game' would become 'physical exercise'). Additionally, searches in Google Images for events such as the Tiananmen Square Protest show very different results inside and outside of China.

...and two terms of hard slog. Sorry folks there is nothing else that I can say than a little bit of hardwork will go along way to you achieving well in your ITGS examinations.

What have you got to look forward to this year?

  • Well obviously your third portfolio will need to be written along with the portfolio extension
  • You will need to review the first two portfolios and polish up ready for send off
  • The first few weeks will be spent on the Case Study research and wiki
  • We have big units on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics along with Simulations
  • A lot of exam practice - to make sure you can answer those long answer questions

Can you all pass - well the answer is yes. Last year the students were successful with 2 - 6's, 2 - 5's and 1 - 4 grade so with hard work you will be able to follow in their footsteps :)

What will you be starting with this season well two things.

  1. To start you off we will do a little ITGS triangle analysis exercise using one of the Diigo links from the last post
  2. Start that Case study research - as I believe the summer work was not started???

Until Wednesday - for our first lesson enjoy your last few days of holiday,

Summer Work – You’ll Love It…

So your first year of ITGS is over and summer is about to begin - and as I know you will get bored I thought I would give you some important work to do over summer.

Remember the Case Study that I talked about - well it is time to get yourself fully acquainted with it - by first of all going to our wiki. And simply reading through the different sections and areas - seeing how you will be able to research around the different topics and case study in general. You will then need to go to the IT Systems page and choose 7 of the IT Systems listed and research and create a page describing how the systems work and how they relate to the Case Study. The choice is on a first come first served basis - so if someone else has chosen a specific IT System page then you will have to choose a different one.

Each IT System page - should have been researched from a number of sources - and have pictures, diagrams, links, text and video to explain the system fully  in detail. Remember to link and then also cite your sources at the bottom of the page.

Any questions you know who to call,

Have a great summer.

Dr T
