Well you have gone through the basic Filemaker Pro tutorials so you now fully understand the structure of a database. JingNow its time for you to attempt to build your own database. So how do you begin, well the last thing you do is jump straight into Filemaker and start typing, as it is important to design the database tables, fields, relationships first otherwise you can end up with simply a MESS!

  • Before you start - here is a reminder of the main parts and structure of a database with a small database quiz.
  • Now go and check a variety of database entity diagrams and this wonderful site to see how database structures are designed and visualised before we even touch a computer. have a look at a variety of database diagrams to see what is involved.
  • Download the following worksheet - surprisingly it tells you what to do - itgsdatabaseminifilmakerpro.
  • Note you can find information on the different types of malware - anywhere if the links do not work - but it is important that you differentiate worms, trojans, viruses, keyloggers etc (this is preparation for the CC Security chapter.)
  • You now need to design your own diagram showing all of the following things:- the tables structure, the field names, the key fields, the data types, the relationships and validation rules. This should be drawn neatly and scanned into a word document. You can upload the picture to a blog post to explain the procedure.
  • Then follow the instructions, you might need to download JING to help you with the video demo of how to use your Database (you may use another screencasting program if you prefer)?

Second task is a little easier - and involves you manipulating a database that already exists to find specific queries and results.

Third task is even easier well maybe - just download this worksheet and guess the date then post an article that you think relates -ITGS Quandary - Worksheet

You will have two weeks or so to complete all three assignments - along with a mini-test soon on Databases and Computer Confluence.
