Well Grade 12’s as you are wading through those past papers – here is some light relief for you to get your teeth into and discuss…
A big story at the moment is that of Wikileaks closing down due to lack of funds when it is now being hailed as the only way forward for serious investigative journalism in the world! A serious statement but a very serious site. Have a read of the following articles and then comment and discuss on the issues, the technologies and whether you agree this is an important way forward or if it should remain closed or even be made illegal. If you do think it is important – why so and why now?
Looking forward to your comments and thoughts…(note Grade 11’s you can join in as well!)

1Wikileaks is good in concept. A website which isn’t afraid to post investigative journalism without fear of the consequences encourages honesty and transparency within the government. It only comes to show that corruption within government power is becoming easier to expose than ever within the internet age.
Wikileaks allows us to understand what’s really going on in politics. If a website such as Wikileaks is still running; we may see politics as a whole improve. But if a website such as Wikileaks has stopped running; corruption ultimately wins over the people.

2It is good to have a site like this on the net. It allows for secrets to be seen by anyone around the world. However there are major problems with it. Reliability is one of them. As an admin for the site…you have to make sure the information you are posting is accurate. If not you are supplying false information. However when watching the video…someone made a comment about how it could bring down governments and preserve traditional democracy. I think that if it where to bring down the government it would not preserve democracy, but topple it and possibly become anarchy. Thats just an opinion.

4I don’t think the site should be illegal, the site shut down because of the inability to raise funds for its volume of users. The site claims to have information about corrupt banks, the UN and the Iraq war. The site will not accept funds from governments or organizations. I think that because the site works with Human Rights and other similar organizations then the information they hold should be made out to the public. However, this does create the issue of letting out information which is not meant to be given out and then that would create more problems with the reactions that come from the site’s users.

5I believe that this tool could be important as a statement towards the freedom of information. However i don’t necessarily think that all the information on wikileaks is necessary. For instance, of the sarah palin emails alot of information was gathered from them including family pictures. I believe that just takes the issue a little far as these pictures serve no purpose compared to other information on Wikileaks. So i think that it is an interesting and inspiring tool, but doesnt necessarily need to be used for everything
